Charles Lancaster was a prestigious British gunmaking firm established in 1811, initially renowned as a premier barrel maker for the famous Joseph Manton. The company evolved into a complete gunmaker by 1826 and became a global leader in firearm innovation, particularly known for its "oval-bore" rifling system and multi-barrelled pistols.
Lancaster is famous for several patented designs that were highly innovative for their time:
- The "Twelve-Twenty" Shotgun: Introduced in 1925, this 12-bore gun is built on a lighter 20-bore action, significantly reducing weight while maintaining firepower.
- The "Wrist-breaker": A nickname for specific back-action sidelock and boxlock models, so-called due to the steep angle of the action when opened. While highly regarded for quality, some modern reviewers find the high profile and ergonomics of these actions somewhat awkward to shoot compared to contemporary designs.
- The Slide-and-Tilt Action: A 19th-century design often seen on double rifles and early shotguns, praised by experts at Vintage Guns for its first-class construction and "modern" aesthetic relative to its era.
Notable Clients: The brand served elite clientele, including Annie Oakley, King Edward VII, and various international royalty such as the Russian Czar
