What’s changed - and what it means for you

The Crime and Policing Act 2026 has removed sound moderators from Section 1 of the Firearms Act 1968. For you as a Firearms Certificate (FAC) holder, that means no more waiting months for a variation. Here is exactly what changed at the counter.

Before
Buying a moderator required a specific variation line on your Firearms Certificate. The application process required Firearms Police approval and could take weeks or months.
Now - the law is in force
Any holder of a valid Firearms Certificate can purchase any number of sound moderators immediately. No variation application. No waiting. Present your FAC, choose your Freyr & Devik moderator, and walk out with it the same day.
Scotland & existing certificates
Scottish air weapon licensing is unaffected. Any moderator already on your FAC remains valid. No action needed on your current certificate.

Did I need to change my existing FAC before buying?+
No. Your existing Firearms Certificate is sufficient as it stands. There is no need to apply for a variation — bring your FAC to Cluny and purchase the same day.
